Pros and cons of Backplate and Wing

scuba club cozumel

The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Both pieces are attached to a buoyancy compensator that establishes neutral buoyancy underwater and positive buoyancy on the surface. Each component can be separated from the other. Backplate and wings are modular systems. They are a good option for scuba divers that aren't sure which type to get. Below are the pros and cons for each.

Stainless Steel

A stainless steel back plate and wings can be purchased with or without an attached harness. 316 stainless-steel is used for the backplate and wings and is highly resistant to saltwater. It is cut with a CNC machine and polished manually to avoid sharp edges that can prematurely wear the strap. You can use them with either a single-air tank system or dual-air tank systems. The stainless steel backplate and wings can be detached for easier storage.

Stainless steel backplates are heavier than aluminium. Stainless steel backplates work well in colder climates and will reduce your weight while diving. Stainless Steel backplates are much easier to fit than lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer can offer weighting advice to help determine what size is best for you. You won't need to replace this backplate as often because it will last longer.

Plastic

Although the plastic back plate/wing buoyancy is not ideal, it can still be useful for replacing weight on the weight belt. Jacket BCDs include pockets and weight integration. The wing and backplate do not have these ancillary functions. These parts are also available separately. We will be discussing the pros and cons for each. It is important to choose the right back plate for you.

Softpack harness

There are many kinds of harnesses, both for wings or backplate. Backplates, wing BCDs, and the most common are both available. They contain all the essential components like a harness, backplate and wing. The user can customize the harness by adding a variety of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs, which are lightweight and flexible, are great for technical divers.

The downside of steel backplate harnesses is their lack of adaptability. The harness is not meant to be used on single tanks. It can only be used on double tanks with permanent banding. While the steel harness offers the most rigid option, it can be cumbersome when used for travel. In addition, it is only suitable for double tanks, and the steel backplate may be unsuitable for use on land. Attaching adapters can make it work with single tanks, but this is not recommended.
